Wildlife day for all the family at Brierley

A free family wildlife celebration day is being held at Brierley Forest Park on Sunday 15th June from 11am until 4pm.

A number of local wildlife organisations are involved in the event and they are hoping that it will encourage youngsters to develop a love of the great outdoors and start coming to their meetings.

The groups in attendance include the local RSPB, RSPB Ashplorers, Notts Wildlife Watch Group, the National Trust, East Midlands Butterfly Conservation, Derby And Notts Entomological Society and Willow Falconry.

They will be putting on a variety of wildlife-themed events including bug hunting, bird feeder making, building insect homes and arts and crafts.

There will also be walks around the park to identify birds and birdsong and wild flowers.

John Turton, from RSPB Ashplorers, said: “The aim is simply to get as many local children as possible to enjoy their local wildlife.

“Several of the groups have regular local meetings and they hope to get as many children as they can outside on a regular basis.”

Ashplorers, which is based at Brierley Forest Park, is an RSPB group for children and holds meetings on the last Sunday of the month.

It runs activities which have included orienteering, quizzes and fun educational games. The group also goes birdwatching, on moth and butterfly hunts and pond dipping.

There are two groups - one for eight to 12 year olds and one for teenagers. Under eights are welcome but must be accompanied throughout by an adult

Brierley Forest Park is accessed from Skegby Road in Huthwaite and has a car park and visitor centre with toilet facilities.
