A 92-year-old woman was one of four victims of burglary in Newstead over the Bank Holiday weekend.

Two other burglaries happened in Markham Street and one on The Quadrangle.

All four incidents took place between 8pm and 11pm on Saturday. Thieves forced rear doors or windows and stole cash and gold jewellery.

Detective Sergeant Marcus Oldroyd said: “Burglars appear to have targeted older members of the community in this recent spate.

“If you saw anything that night, or suspect someone you know was involved, call us.

“We would be especially keen to hear from anyone who has noticed a friend or relative flashing an unusual amount of cash around, or if you have been approached to buy gold jewellery.”

Watch out for your neighbours. Be security conscious, vigilant and report any suspicious activity around houses and gardens to police.
