Alcoholic bit partner’s cheek after she tried to drink his cider

Christopher Wayne Cale, 44, of Carnarven Grove, Sutton, also threw objects at his partner and verbally abused her in the hours leading up to the attack.

After being found guilty of assault following a trial, Cale appeared at Mansfield Magistrates’ Court already in custody.

Prosecuting, Robert Carr said the couple had been at home watching TV on the evening of November 7 when Cale’s partner tried to take a mouthful of his drink.

He swore and threw cushions at her and then followed her up and down stairs, insulting her. She finally went to bed before Cale came into the room and straddled her and bit her cheek.

The court was told how Cale had a history of domestic violence, but in mitigation Yvonne Wragg said that he had been a ‘turn around in his behaviour’.

She said: “He accepts it was him who was the problem on this occasion, previously he has blamed the victim.”

Cale accepts he had been drinking that evening, but said he was not drunk.

He had up to six cans of cider that night, but says because of his alcohlism, he would usually need to drink up to 25 cans to be drunk.

Cale, who had been in custody since the assault, was handed a 20-week sentence suspended for 18 months and was able to leave the courtroom.

A indefinite retraining order was put in place to prevent him from contacting his partner and he was made to pay her £100 compensation, plus £450 costs.
