THE CALL of the wild could be heard when exotic animals and creepy crawlies slithered into Hucknall to delight youngsters during the school half-term break.
Almost 200 visitors flocked to the SureStart Butlers Hill and Broomhill Children’s Centre on Broomhill Road for a special animal party.
Creatures on show included Meeko the racoon dog, Flower the skunk, Merlin the dragon lizard, Daisy the cornsnake, a bullfrog, spiders, rabbits and many more.
Children were even able to handle the animals under guidance from the Leicester-based organisation Animals For Parties, run by Jon Idle.
Sadly, due to the popularity of the event, not all the youngsters got to see the animals up close.
To make amends, the children’s centre will hold an invitation-only repeat during the Easter holidays to compensate for the disappointment.
Michelle Squires, who is a community development worker at the children’s centre, said: “We had massive support and it was a real success.”
Most of the children who attended were aged five and under. Michelle added: “We had some really good feedback. One mum said her son was normally shy but handling the animals had boosted his confidence.”
