A keen amateur footballer, Robert Mitchell has been appointed the new chief executive of the council after the retirement of Phil Marshall, who had held the post since 2009.

“There are significant opportunites for economic growth and regeneration in Ashfield, and I will focus on delivering these,” said Mr Mitchell. “But I am also passionate about public services and committed to reducing inequalities.

“These are challenging times for all local authorities in very tough financial times. But my experience in the public and private sector will help to ensure that Ashfield Council can meet the challenges it faces.”

A father of two who also enjoys history and walking, Mr Mitchell joins Ashfield on 1st June from Tamworth Borough Council where, in a senior position, he had a successful track record of modernising and integrating services and delivering economic and social improvements.

“I have worked successfully in local government for more than 15 years and I understand the issues facing councils,” said Mr Mitchell. “More importantly, I understand the issues facing residents and communities.

“I am really keen to start working with councillors, staff and partner agencies to establish and deliver the council’s key priorities. I want to continue the positive work done by the council and develop it further.”

Council leader, Coun Chris Baron (Lab), said: “Robert has been appointed after an open and rigorous recruitment process and will bring a new face and fresh perspective to Ashfield. His experience in relation to growth and regeneration will be particularly helpful to the district.”
