Asia-bound on bike

Brave Karon Maxwell has never been to Southeast Asia or even cycled very far for that matter but wanted a new challenge to raise money for a cause close to her heart.

Karon (52), who works at F A Henshaws furniture shop, said a recent injury had prompted the decision.

“Just after Christmas I slipped over and dislocated my shoulder and felt like an old lady,” she said.

“I am a member of the NSPCC locally and have got to that time in my life where I wanted to do something big.

“I am quite nervous about it now. I am beginning to think it is the most stupid thing I thought I could do in my life.”

The ride, which is a mixture of on and off-road terrain, must be completed in six days, with the longest day being 55 miles.

Said Karon: “I have loved the training and have been all over Sherwood Pines and now have a new-found love of cycling.

“I have been building up each week going further distance-wise and trying to go everyday.

“I started out quite unfit but this has improved my fitness quite a lot.”

As Karon is Mansfield born and bred she will definitely be challenged by the humid temperatures during her challenge but is up for the slog nonetheless.
