Sue Harpham and Sue Edwards were nominated for the Newark and Sherwood District Council awards by Blidworth’s Coun Yvonne Woodhead.
They were recognised for their voluntary work with WASP (We Are Special People) who are a support group for parents in the Rainworth and Blidworth area with children on the autistic spectrum.
This includes Autism, Asperger’s Syndrome and ADHD.
Being nominated and then winning the award has come as an unexpected delight.
“We were both thrilled to be presented with this award,” said Sue Edwards. “We didn’t know anything about it when we were invited to the ceremony and it came as a big shock but we were really pleased and the group were delighted too.”
The pair tirelessly provide support and assistance to families in need and arrange activities for the children such as skating, pond dipping, swimming, horse riding and a trip to the panto.
They also support the families of the children and the children themselves and are constantly fundraising for the activities required and are have recently been adopted by Mansfield’s Sainsbury’s store.
WASP also help other charities through fundraising and training other volunteers.
“They really are special people,” said nominator, Coun Woodhead.
