A TOP-notch performance from Newstead Brass band combined with a skiffle band and swing music to make sure the fantastic ‘Picnic In Crossley Park’ went with a bang.

The award-winning Newstead players provided the musical accompaniment for a spectacular fireworks display that was the finale of an event staged as part of Ripley Music Festival.

The concert started with young musicians from South East Derbyshire Music Centre Swing Band, followed by skiffle stars Please Y Self, who have been entertaining audiences around the world for more than 30 years.

Newstead Brass performed a combination of classic rock and lively brass compositions before leading the audience in a couple of ‘Last Night Of The Proms’ favourites.

The closing stages saw the Newstead band stick to the event’s ‘Italian Journey’ theme and perform Prokofiev’s ‘Montagues And Capulets’ (now best known as the theme music to TV show ‘The Apprentice’) and Respighi’s ‘Pines Of Rome’.
