Band on song for church restoration fund

A BUMPER audience turned out to support a concert aimed at raising much-needed cash to repair crumbling parts of Hucknall Parish Church.

Hucknall and Linby Mining Community Brass took centre stage at the Market Place Church, which has launched a restoration initiative to raise £150,000.

The money is needed to tackle cracks in the tower before the building becomes unsafe.

A final fundraising total is yet to be revealed from the concert. But those involved have reflected on a successful event.

The band played a varied selection including movie hits from the likes of ‘Forrest Gump’ and ‘The Great Escape’, as well as marches and hymn tunes.

Soloists included Emma Wood, who performed ‘Demelza’ — a piece that won her first prize at last year’s Bolsover Festival — Ben Armstrong, who played ‘Sugar Blues’, and Jon Clare, who performed the classic Welsh piece ‘David Of The White Rock’.

In closing, the Rev George Knowles thanked the band and the audience for “a wonderful evening”.
