Band’s new start after Chad appeal

Kirkby Colliery Welfare Band feared collapse after it was announced the welfare club where it used to rehearse would be closing.

The band made an urgent appeal to Chad readers on 30th October for rehearsal space and new members to keep the 110-year-old band going.

Val Wilkes, band secretary, said that within the space of a few days the band gained a new conductor and around 10 generous offers of a permanent home.

She said: “As a result of the excellent news item in Chad, Kirkby Colliery Welfare Band received 10 replies all offering us accommodation in our local area.”

The band will now hold regular rehearsals at the Wyvern Club on Urban Road in Kirkby.

Val added: “ Everyone has been really helpful and we are very happy at the Wyvern Club.

“We gained a new conductor within two days and are still looking for a few players but hopefully that will be sorted out soon.

“All is well and we thank everybody for their tremendous help and good wishes received from many people.”

Nev Buxton took over as the band’s conductor a few days after the appeal meaning it has been able to carry on with rehearsals during the Christmas period.

Val added that the band was saddened to lose its former home of 40 years at the East Kirkby Miners Welfare after it closed on 20th October.

The miners had built the band’s old rehearsal space on contributions from workers at the Summit Colliery.
