Julian Brian Robinson, 47, of Watson Road, Worksop, admitted dangerous driving, and driving while disqualified and without third party insurance or a valid test certificate.

Daniel Pietryka, prosecuting, said Robinson was spotted by police driving a silver Ford Fiesta at 5pm on June 21 in Worksop, after he had been convicted of driving while disqualified in January.

Mr Pietryka said: “The car made off at speed. The police lost the vehicle for a short period. He overtook a vehicle and went through a red traffic light. He went down a one way street.

“The vehicle was abandoned. He was found on foot nearby with the car keys in his pocket.”

Ian Pridham, mitigating, said Robinson had been asked to leave the Mansfield caravan park where he had been living after a dispute with the owner.

“He quickly made contact with a landlord in Worksop, but then he had to transport all his belongings. Foolishly he borrowed a vehicle to move his belongings.

“He was seen and recognised by a police officer and he panicked.”

Mr Pridham said there were no other vehicles in sight when Robinson drove dangerously on Carlton Road and Hardy Street.

“His first comments to the police were ‘I know I have been stupid.’”

The court heard Robinson’s partner had died in December last year and he suffered from diabetes.

Mr Pridham said: “It would be fair to say his world has fallen apart. His thought processes have not been good.

“He is extremely concerned that he won’t receive proper treatment in prison.

“All his worldly possessions were in the car including a large quantity of sentimental items from his partner.”

Robinson was sentenced to 18 weeks in prison for the driving offences, plus 20 weeks for breaching a suspended sentence.

He was banned from driving for 12 months and until he passes an extended test. He must also pay a £115 victim surcharge.
