Banned man set to stand in election

A man who has been banned from council buildings for his protests about child abuse is to challenge for a seat in the upcoming elections.

Former Forest Town man, Mickey Summers, who was sexually abused as a child under council care, will contest the St Ann’s ward at Nottingham City Council, held currently by Labour’s John Collins.

Mr Summers, who is spearheading a campaign for an independent inquiry into historic child abuse at council-run homes from the 1960s up to the 2000s, will stand as a UKIP candidate.

Mr Summers is campaigning for an independent inquiry into the child abuse, once Nottinghamshire Police’s own inquiry, Operation daybreak, is complete.

He said: “It’s not personal, it’s business, and the business of the people of Nottingham.

“If we can’t get to them for this inquiry from the outside, then I will get from the inside.

“I never wanted to make it political but I feel like I’ve reached the point that there’s no way forward.”

He says he will fight his campaign around the protections of children and more services available to them.

Mr Summers hit the headlines last year when he staged a protest at Nottinghamshire County Council’s during a full council meeting.

As well as several other confrontations and high-profile protests, he has since been told he is only allowed into council premises unless he has an appointment, otherwise he will be escorted from the premises.
