BERRY HILL: Thieves steal veteran’s mobility scooter

A Berry Hill pensioner who survived dozens of missions over occupied territory during the Second World War is appealing for the return of his mobility scooter after thieves broke into his garage.

Bomber Command veteran Ron Brown contacted Chad to say that the blue scooter, which has an RAF emblem on the seat, was stolen last week and to urge readers to be on the look out.

The 93-year-old, who flew a total of 64 missions during the war, said he had locked the garage the night before the theft but came down stairs early on November 19th to get ready for his early morning swim.

Ron, of Gordon Brae, Berry Hill Park, told Chad: “I go for an early morning swim and I came downstairs and found the garage door open and the scooter missing.

“Stealing something like this is a really heartless thing to do because they would have known it was for a disabled person. The scooter is absolutely top of the range and very distinctive.

“I just found it so useful to get about and do my shopping and it just seems so unfair when they come and take something like this away.”

The scooter, worth around £2,000, was donated to Ron two years ago by the Royal British Legion after he suffered a heart attack

Ron (pictured) was a co-pilot in Lancaster and Stirling bombers and flew two tours of duty during the war.

On his second tour, Ron was supposed to fly 34 missions, but on the 30th his aircraft was hit by flak over Cologne and had to make a crash landing in Suffolk.

A Nottinghamshire Police spokesman said A blue four-wheeled mobility scooter was stolen when thieves forced entry to the garage of a house in Gordon Brae.

It happened at some point between 3.30pm on 18th November and 6.30am on 19th November.
