Bilsthorpe black spot exposed on film

Volunteers from the village produced the video after funding for planned improvements to the busy A614 junction was taken back by Nottinghamshire County Council.

The stretch of road has seen numerous fatalities in recent years, including four teenagers in a horror crash.

They were among six people - including a couple from Edwinstowe -who died in the smash on the A614, near Bilsthorpe, on Friday 13th February 2009.

In 2005, 42-year-old joiner Marlon Davies, of Cotgrave, was also killed at the location when his motorbike was struck by an overtaking car.

But campaigners in the village said that near misses at the junction happen all the time and have now produced a video to prove how dangerous the crossing can be.

A spokesman for the Bilsthorpe.com community website, which produced the film, told Chad: “This footage of the junction makes uncomfortable viewing.

“The vehicle manoeuvres shown in the film are representative of hundreds of other similar incidents. It also has to be borne in mind that the filming of the A614 Junction at Bilsthorpe was carried out in excellent driving conditions.

“If the road conditions had been poorer this would be another factor which would add yet further risks.

“This outdated junction has been the root cause of misery and trauma to many road users. Local people avoid this junction if they possibly can, but drivers unfamiliar with the junction regularly fall prey to its dangers.”

The film was shot over a few hours at the junction and the group says it is a representative example of the way motorists, pedestrians and cyclists behave at the location.

In the film, retired traffic officer Tony Todd reviews the footage, and local politicians also call for improved safety measures at the junction.
