Building Society gives a cash boost to Ashfield cats charity

A charity that cares for unwanted, abandoned and mistreated cats has been given a cash boost by the Nottingham branch of Yorkshire Building Society.

The Ashfield & Amber Valley Cats Protection Shelter has been given £480 from the Yorkshire Building Society’s Charitable Foundation scheme after being suggested by a branch member.

The cash, which will help cover vets bills and general running costs, was handed over by Jack Leatherland, mobile customer consultant, and Ivana Hallam, assistant manager from the Milton Street branch.

Jack said: “One of our members suggested we support the Cats Protection Shelter because of the vital job it does and when we visited we could see exactly why it was such a deserving cause.

“Ivana and I were amazed at how hard the dedicated volunteers work. As well as caring for the cats, they also keep the shelter amazingly clean which is important because a lot of the cats and kittens are in a very poor condition when they arrive.”

The volunteer-run shelter is currently caring for 16 kittens and 20 adult cats. Each of those has to be given vaccinations, blood tests and microchips as well being neutered if they are old enough.

Shelter coordinator Diane Band, said: “Each year we have to raise around £30,000 to keep the shelter going. We hold lots of fund raising events and donations, like this one from the Yorkshire Building Society, are always greatly appreciated.

“It is not just vets bills that are a big expense. We also have to feed all the cats and kittens, buy litter for their trays and keep the shelter spotlessly clean.”
