Bulwell: Club to flat plans could create 'parking nightmare', say residents

A planning application has been submitted to Nottingham City Council to convert the large two-storey Victorian property into four one-bedroom flats and six two-bedroom flats, including a first-floor rear extension.

The applicants say: “With the close proximity of Bulwell town centre and a frequent public transport service, it is unlikely that the flat occupants will be car owners.

“However, three parking spaces have been provided with a sufficient turning area to allow vehicles to exit in forward gear.”

A nearby resident who is objecting to the plan says: “It is more likely than not that the buyers of the flats will be car owners. Most people have a car or work van these days and some households even have two. So if this goes ahead, then parking for us residents could be a nightmare.

“If all 10 buyers own a car, that’s an extra seven cars that will be parked out along the front of Highbury Road, which already has limited space as it is.”

The building was originally known as Bulwell Liberal Club before becoming the Coopers. The club had a strong musical tradition and famous Nottingham band Paper Lace once performed there.
