Members of guides from Bulwell proved a singing sensation at the weekend when they helped build a Ginormous Choir in a day at Nottingham’s Albert Hall.

The group of youngsters joined 450 other members of Girlguiding Nottinghamshire which included members of Rainbows (aged 5-7), Brownies (7-10), Guides (10-14), Rangers and Senior Section (14-25) supported by adult volunteers and a team from community arts organisation Music for Everyone.

Members of Bulwell-based 87th Nottingham Brownies and Guides had a great time.

“I sing in my school choir and I thought this one might be fun too,’ said Tia-Louise Sulley, eight, during the rehearsals. “It’s really exciting and I’m meeting lots of new people.”

Fellow Brownie Roxy Hastings, aged seven, agreed: “I enjoy singing in my bedroom. Helen from Music for Everyone is great, she really makes us laugh.”

Steering the day was Angela Kay, artistic director of Music for Everyone, who helped the girls polish up a diverse programme ranging from pop songs and rock anthems to favourites from film and stage musicals.

The morning was filled by group workshops and rehearsals, with each age group given their own song to work on. All the participants joined together to rehearse three songs as a ‘Ginormous Choir’, and the day culminated in a special concert for the participants’ families and friends.

“It was great working with the Music for Everyone team in enabling and inspiring so many of Girlguiding Nottinghamshire’s members to sing together,” said County Commissioner, Kate Royse. “Guiding aims to give our members opportunities to try all sorts of new things in a non-competitive girl only environment, and what could be better than building a Ginormous Choir?”

Girlguiding Nottinghamshire needs more adult volunteers, not only to make events like the Ginormous Choir possible but also to help run units for girls who are waiting to join.
