Bulwell late opening application for off licence sparks controversy

At present, Londis, of Highbury Road, is licensed for selling drink between 8am and 11 pm Monday and Saturday and 10 am to 11.30pm on Sundays.

A new application is asking for the liquor sales hours to apply from 6am to 2am seven days a week, which would mean a total increase of 37.5 hours a week.

Nottingham City Council’s three Labour members for Bulwell Forest ward, Couns Alan Clark, Eunice Campbell and Nick McDonald, have become aware of the application.

The councillors are seeking the views of neighbouring residents and asking if they think the application supports or undermines the licensing objectives. These include prevention of crime and disorder, public safety and prevention of public nuisance.

A letter circulated to local people states: “If it is clear that the majority of representations we receive are not in favour of the proposal, we will personally object to the application and look to represent those views at a licensing hearing to be held at a later date.”

Londis have sent a letter to customers, stressing their aim of providing ‘a great service and local friendly convenience store to shop at’.

John Goodman, who lives on the nearby New Highbury Estate, said: “I can’t see that it would cause any problems.”

But a resident of Henrietta Street, who did not want to be named, said: “You sometimes get young people congregating outside the store.”

“I don’t think anything should be done that might lead to anti-social behaviour.”
