Bulwell MP meets education minister Michael Gove

Bulwell MP Graham Allen claims that there is an almost once-in-a-lifetime chance to fundamentally change education.

Mr Allen made the comments to the Dispatch after a meeting he had with Education Secretary Michael Gove and the head of Ofsted, Sir Michael Wilshaw.

The meeting was arranged following news that a number of Nottingham schools, including the Bulwell Academy, had been put into special measures following unannounced visits from Ofsted, the government body that inspects and regulates services which care for children and young people.

Mr Allen said: “This is a unique opportunity, that will not come again, to do something fundamental to the system rather than put a sticking plaster over the issues.

“The real answer is to change, to make sure children are school-ready at four, and then ready for secondary school.”

Paul Halcro, the principal at Bulwell Academy, said: “Graham Allen has always been a great supporter of the Bulwell Academy and he has an excellent understanding of the issues within his constituency.

“His response to the recent Ofsted inspections shows he fully understands what is needed to improve achievement and future success for young people in Bulwell.”
