Bulwell shop worker chased knifeman for 40 minutes after robbery

A brave shop worker tracked down a knifeman after chasing him for 40 minutes when he fled the store with stolen cash.

Aneela Hussain, 29, of Bobbers Mill, was working behind the counter in the Commercial Stores shop in Bulwell when regular customer Steven Golding walked in and pulled out a kitchen knife.

Wearing a grey scarf over his face and a hat, the brazen father-of-three demanded she open the till on May 15 this year.

When she refused, Golding repeated his demand.

Eventually he reached for cash, taking £120.

Miss Hussain said she recognised the man as a former customer and was “upset” that he had decided to steal from her boyfriend’s family who have owned the shop for 13 years.

She added: “I followed him all the way to his house through alleyways and waited for him to come out. When he was inside I called the police and kept them on the phone so they knew what I was doing.

Police found him hiding in a bush and moved in to arrest him.

“After a while he came out of the house and I ran after him again. We ended up running to another estate in Bulwell called Hempshill and that was when I saw a police car so I flagged them over and we all ended up in a field searching for him.

“He was hiding in the field and the police arrested him in front of me.

“I just know that had I not chased him and made sure he was caught then he would have got away with it and I could not let that happen.”

Miss Hussain said she was shocked and only realised the danger of the situation after he had been caught.

She said: “I wasn’t thinking straight. I just wanted him to be caught. I was never scared though - I was just angry that he had stolen from us.

“I ended up chasing him for 40 minutes in total and it didn’t really hit home until a few days later.”

Golding was jailed for four years during at Nottingham Crown Court heard yesterday (June 14).

CCTV was played in court showing 37-year-old Golding, of Grainger Avenue, West Bridgford, rob the shop.

David Outterside, mitigating, said: “He is sorry to his victims for what happened on this day.”

His client pleaded guilty over video link from prison to robbery and threatening the woman with the knife.

fter battling an alcohol problem for years, he said Golding made a “hasty and dreadful decision to go and steal money to pay for drink”.

Sentencing Golding, Judge Stuart Rafferty QC said he was awarding the shop worker £200 to mark her public service.

“She should be commended for her bravery and her persistence in pursuing this man who might otherwise have evaded justice,” he said.
