Bulwell’s former boxing champion Delroy Bryan glassed man in city bar

Bryan, who won his title in January 1991 and although he lost it a year later went on to regain the title and successfully defended on four occasions.

Bryan, a former security officer at Nottingham Crown Court who now works in the construction trade, struck out at Glen Bowler during the incident on Nottingham’s Upper Parliament Street.

The single blow left Mr Bowler with a number of relatively minor cuts and Graham Russell, prosecuting, told Lincoln Crown Court there was no evidence that he was left with any permanent scarring.

Bryan (47), of Willow Hill Close, Bulwell, admitted a charge of unlawful wounding arising out of the incident on 23rd August 2013.

The court was told that he had previously been given a suspended jail sentence in 2011 for a similar pub glassing.

Recorder Allan Dooley gave him an 18-month jail sentence suspended for two years with supervision and 250 hours of unpaid work

Bryan was ordered to pay £500 compensation, £500 towards prosecution costs and a £100 victim surcharge.

Recorder Dooley also placed him on an electronically monitored night time curfew for 12 months and ordered him to complete a six month alcohol treatment programme.

Recorder Dooley told him “This was a gratuitous act of violence in a public house late in the evening on somebody who deserved nothing like it.

“This is not the first time in these circumstances that you have perpetrated such an offence. You did it some 20 months before this occurred.

“You present a dichotomy. In normal everyday life you receive glowing references but late at night the story is quite different. Because of your personal circumstances I am prepared to suspend the sentence.”

Samantha Jones, defending, said Bryan was supported by 15 references plus a further reference signed by 26 people.

She told the court “This as three wounds that were quite minor.

“There was no pre-meditation.

“It was impulse behaviour. He is extremely remorseful.

“Mr Bryan is quite an upstanding member of his community.

“He was British champion in boxing in 1992.

“He has held down solid jobs including for 10 years when he was a security guard at Nottingham Crown Court.

“He has very good references and this is something that is out of character.”

Bryan won the British title in January 1991 when he defeated Kirkland Laing.

Although he lost the following year to Gary Jacobs he won the title back in September 1993 and held it for a further two years.

In 1994, he fought for the European welterweight title, but lost to Jose Luis Navarro in Spain.

During a 12-year professional career Bryan won 32, lost 19 and drew one of his 52 bouts.
