BUSINESS: Airport sees passenger numbers fall

A fall in the numbers of passengers using East Midlands Airport has been put down to a leading carrier's decision to leave the site.

4.5 million people travelled through the airport in the 12 months until March 31 – 2.2 percent down on the 4.6 million in the previous year.

The owners said that Monarch Airlines’ decision to stop using the Leicestershire airport in April last year had hit numbers, but that the business was still ‘ahead of expectations’.

They also said that, despite Brexit, the airport remained in a ‘strong position’.
