A NEW bus service is being launched to help hundreds of commuters make their way to work at Sherwood Business Park in Annesley.
The number 2 service, run by Nottingham firm Premiere Travel, will link the employment hub to the main tram stop in Hucknall and as far as Brinsley, via Underwood, Selston and Jacksdale.
Coun Richard Jackson (Con), Notts County Council’s lead member for transport and highways, said: “The new service provides an important link. We have been working closely with local businesses and representatives from parish councils to make sure that we get it right.”
For the first three years, the route will be paid for through a £330,000 grant from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), allocated by the East Midlands Development Agency (emda). It is hoped the service will then become self-funding.
“We are very grateful to emda and the ERDF for their funding,” Coun Jackson said. “We are using it to help people take up work at places they would not otherwise have been able to get to.
“It will also allow people who currently drive there to leave their cars at home and help reduce congestion and carbon emissions.”
The new buses, which will run from 6 am to 9 pm from Monday August 1, are expected to be used by schoolchildren too.
Steve Greaves, Premiere’s managing director, said: “We will now work with the council, local businesses on the route and the other agencies involved to make this new service a success. By offering our range of great-value tickets, we hope to encourage more car-users who currently drive to the business park.”
