Byron: ‘Man of action’

LORD Byron preferred to be regarded as a ‘man of action’ rather than being praised for his poetry, said Ralph Lloyd-Jones, a local studies librarian for Mansfield and Ashfield, who is pictured during a talk he gave during the International Byron Festival.

He added that Byron would most likely have felt happier being buried near the last resting place of Hucknall’s national prizefighting champion, Ben Caunt, at the parish church than with kings and queens at Westminster Abbey.

Ralph said boxing was Byron’s favourite sport and he sparred with Robert Rushton, a servant at the poet’s ancestral home, Newstead Abbey — DISPIC NHUD12-1469-2.
