Charity-run mental health service in Shirebrook earnsthumbs-up

A Shirebrook mental health service has been given top marks by the people who use it.

The Derbyshire Sustainable Living Scheme, run by the national charity Rethink Mental Illness, helps people with mental health problems such as depression, bipolar disorder or schizophrenia to live independently and be involved with their community.

A survey published by the charity shows that at least 97 per cent of 66 people who used the service between June 2012 and May 2013 said staff had listened to them and treated them with dignity, as well as supported them towards achieving their goals.

The service, which opened in 2002, employs 12 staff who help around 300 people each year.

Staff visit people throughout north-east Derbyshire to give emotional and practical support, help with skills such as budgeting and provide encouragement to join social groups.

Kenna Littlewood, who works at the service, says: “At Rethink Mental Illness we believe that people with mental health problems can recover and lead fulfilling lives. Our staff are committed to supporting people to achieve this.

“We’re delighted that people using our service feel listened to and respected and that we have played a part in supporting them to achieve their goals. This feedback is encouraging and we look forward to continuing to support people in Derbyshire.”

People with mental health problems and who are at least 16-years-old can contact the service on 01623 746 572.
