Craig Beastall admitted attacking PC Colin Kirkup following the England versus Uruguay World Cup game on Thursday 19th June 2014.

The officer was attending a disturbance at the Talbot pub, in Nottingham Road, Mansfield, that evening when Beastall head-butted him in the face. The force fractured his cheekbone, leaving him with lasting nerve damage.

The 26-year-old, of Third Avenue, previously pleaded guilty to causing actual bodily harm. At Nottingham Crown Court on Tuesday (5th August 2014) he was sentenced to six months in jail, as well as ordered to pay £1,000 in compensation to PC Kirkup.

Recorder Jason MacAdam said he had no choice but to hand Beastall a custodial sentence being that he had assaulted a public servant who was trying to protect the public from offences such as this.

Mansfield town Sergeant Eddie Brudzinski said: “This is a typical example of someone getting caught up in the moment and letting it get the better of him.

“Beastall lashed out at someone who was simply there to keep people safe. Those actions have now cost him six months of his freedom.”
