Church of Christ

President Polite Mukange led the meeting and also read from the New Testament. The Old Testament reader was Roger Longden. Rex Foster served communion. Presley Mukange gave the address. David Wilson led the evening meeting the speaker was Ken Mullan from the Ilkeston church.

Our Lady RC Church

Sunday week’s mass was conducted by Fr F. Higgins. Kirsten McPherson read the lesson. Communion was administered by Molly Beardsley, Mary Claire-Endy, David Shipley, Herve Poveda and Andrew O’Mara-Winson. Rex Clarke and John Fejfer took the collection. Maranatha played the music. Cath Moulton served coffee in aid of parish funds.

Forest Street Baptist

The church held a Messy Church planning meeting on Tuesday week. The Church Deacon’s meeting was held on Thursday week. Pastor Derek Smith of Arnold led Sunday week’s morning service. The reader was Mervyn Cole-Bowen. Dennis and Kathleen Gregory served coffee. Music was by Doreen and Margaret Homer. The Rev Ros Wilkes led an afternoon Messy Church assisted Gregory who introduced guest speaker Rev Judith Shewin. The pianist was Doris Hickton. Irene Wass served refreshments.

1st Guides

The Guiodes esumed at St Wilfrid’s Scout HQ on Monday week following the Easter break. Plans for the Spring Bank Holiday camp were discussed and the early summer programme planned.

Spiritualist Church

Lynda Sills chaired Sunday week’s divine service. The speaker was Paul Green. The meeting was particularly well attended. Janet Julian led Monday week’s demonstration of clairvoyance given by a new speaker Joanne Huckett of South Yorkshire. Gary Price and Janet Julian then delivered healing. The awareness group met on Tuesday week.

7Cs Christian F’ship

David Holloway and Mark Roxburgh led Sunday week’s worship. The Faith Builder session was by Glenys Holloway who then served communion with David Holloway. Mr Holloway also gave the address. Midweek Fellowship was held at the centre on Wednesday week.

3rd Brownies

Leader Wendy Osborne welcomed the pack back to Trinity Methodist church following the Easter break. The pack meets every Monday in term time at 5.45pm. Brownies made friendship bands as part of their ‘I’m a survivor badge’ and also had games and singing. Abbi Grundy assisted.

Hill Methodist Church

The Lunch club met on Tuesday week. Wednesday week’s Mother and Toddler group was followed by the Wednesday Fellowship led by Joy Franks. Beryl Richardson spoke. The organist was Betty Grice. The Prayer group met on Saturday week. Sunday week’s morning service was taken by the Rev Dermot Thornberry. The readers were Joyce Bradshaw and Jean Low. Music was by the Worship group. Barrie Smith led the evening meeting. The organist was Betty Grice.

Friends of Salvation Army

The group resumed after its Easter break, led by Gladys Newall. Freda Mills served refreshments. Members had a general chat and discussion on local events.


The committee wish to thank all who contributed to or attended Saturday week’s coffee morning, particularly everyone who manned stalls and the kitchen staff for keeping up a flow of refreshments. The next coffee morning will be on Saturday 31st May.

Trinity Methodist

Kirkby Churches Together held early prayers on Tuesday week. SureStart Messy Play and the Tuesday Fellowship then met. Fellowship members shared favourite music and readings. The crochet class met in the afternoon. Trinity Singers rehearsed on Wednesday week then performed at Kestrel Lodge. There was also a rehearsal on Friday week. Framework held an advice session on Wednesday week. The knitting class met on Thursday week followed by the Mother and Toddler session, the Luncheon club and the Friendship club who watched a film. Kirkby Churches Together held early prayers before Healing in the Street on Saturday week. Trinity Singers then gave a concert in aid of the Methodist Mission in Mali. A cream tea was then served. Rev Mick Dilley celebrated Holy Communion on Sunday week. Carole Taylor and Nancy Shipley assisted. Nancy was also church steward. The door steward was Maureen Shilling who also took the offering with Margaret Campbell. Jean Wykes led Family Time. The readers were Teresa Rawding and Nancy Shipley. Mike Berry and Sarah Copeland-Davies gave a dramatic reading. The organist was Fay Shackleton. Mike Oliver led prayers. Jenny Wilcock and Teresa Rawding served coffee in aid of the Lincs and Notts Air Ambulance. Trinity Singers performed ‘O God You Search Me’. Maureen Shilling lit the candle. Church flowers were donated by Barbara Rowe.

50 Plus

Forty members had an outing to Rufford Park on Monday week, enjoying a cream tea in the afternoon. The trip was organised by Gilliam Layton and Margaret Snell.

St Thomas Church

Holy Communion was taken on Wednesday week followed by a shared lunch. A carers and toddlers session took place in the afternoon. On Friday week, the Mothers’ Union sponsored a ladies pamper evening led by Debbie Douce. The Rev Neil Popham celebrated Holy Communion on Sunday week. Reader Chris Manning assisted. Sarah Clarke then narrated an Easter Play ‘Follow that man’ performed by church children’s groups. Readings and prayers were by John Cook. Alan Dykes administered the chalice and was also a church steward with wife Barbara. John and Sandra Walker served refreshments. In the evening, the vicar led a memorial service Eric Russ and Chris Manning assisted. Pauline Russ, Irene Swainson and John Walker read the lessons. David Coulton played the organ.
