COMMUNITY NEWS: Shirebrook

The Annual Bolsover Seated Volleyball and Boccia competition organised by Shane Turner, John Barker and Martin Mansell the nine time Paralympic medallist was hosted recently by the Academy. Shirebrook Academy students were crowned overall winners of the seated volleyball competition, beating Heritage High School by two points in the league table. The winner of the Boccia competition was Palterton Primary School who having trained incredibly hard won four of their five games. Unfortunately, as they are a primary school they cannot progress to the next round and subsequently Shirebrook Academy who were placed second will now go on to represent Bolsover District in the County Schools Competition on Tuesday 8th July at Heritage High School. The Boccia event is one of many taking place on that day with the County Finals being held at Mount St. Mary’s School. Over 1400 students have won the right to represent their school and district on that day.

Christian Centre

A consultation evening was held recently, when members of the church completed questionnaires regarding the building and the community garden. The Coffee Brooke Café was open on Thursday week and Friday week mornings. Large numbers of the general public attended a recent Open Day at the Christian Centre where display boards highlighted the new building renovations, the work of the Food Bank and the progress made with the Community Garden. Cream teas were prepared and served by Mrs A. M. Hellewell and Mrs Rene Guy who were assisted by church members. A mosaic tile workshop was led by Junction Arts. Amanda Pell led and spoke at the Sunday week Celebration meeting when she took as her title, ‘You’re only as strong as your last storm.’ Tracy Engyel, Pastor P. and Mrs A. M. Hellewell led the worship. Speaker, Mr Barry Woodward will talk about drug rehabilitation at 6pm, Sunday 15th June. Everyone welcome.

Sport Bolsover

Back to Basketball sessions for males and females aged 16+ take place every Thursday from 8-9pm at Shirebrook Leisure Centre. The first session is FREE (£3 thereafter). No previous playing experience is required. All you need are trainers, sportswear and a drink. No need to pre-book, just turn up. For further information contact Sarah Bingham 01246 242364. Street Sports are held every Wednesday 8.30-9.30pm at Shirebrook Academy for young people aged 14+, free of charge. Football is usually played. No need to book. Chit Chat Club

Mrs D. Gough recently welcomed members to Shirebrook Village Hall where she also collected subscriptions. Members played bingo with caller Maureen Gough and held a raffle. Refreshments were served by Maureen Gough, Annette Toon and Sylvia Garton. Birthday cards and crystal ornaments were presented to Joyce Wharmsley, Norma Ayres, Joan Roe and Audrey Draycott. There will be no club meetings Tuesday 27th May and Tuesday 3rd June.

Bolsover Wellness

Julie Bonsall welcomed members on a daily basis to Shirebrook Leisure Centre Monday week to Thursday week inclusive. Members took part in chair based exercises as part of the ‘Wellness Programme.’ Details of how to access the programme are available from Julie Bonsall 748313.

Leisure Centre

On Wednesday week morning Lina Harris led an Abs Blast session and the Kettle bells session. Danny Butler organised and led the boxing circuit and a spinning session during the evening. Activities can be booked on 748313.

Happy Chat Coffee

Julie Bonsall welcomed members to Shirebrook Leisure Centre on Wednesday week where she also collected subscriptions and served refreshments. Table games and a raffle were organised by Dot Hindley and Jo Sunderland. Sheila Garland was presented with birthday cards, a cake and flowers.

Early Birds ASC

Laura Elliott and Becky Fletcher organised activities for children including jewellery making, drawing and board games. Children also used a Playstation and a Wii console.

Early Birds Day N’sry

Babies have been busy in their garden gigging and planting seeds. Imaginative role play was with a castle and little people. Children used bead frames and completed peg jigsaws. Toddlers played with toy dinosaurs in sand and with fish and nets in water. Tactile play was with jelly. Children traced their own names and used phonic bean bags for language and mark making. Various shapes were used for mathematics. Pre-school children took part in junk modelling, played with Constructons and completed three letter jigsaws. Outdoors play was with a large parachute.

Sports Club

Bookings are now being taken for a visit to Liverpool Football Club on Sunday 8th June, which includes a tour of the Melwood training ground, stadium and museum. To book ring 748907 or 07890600652.

Tuesday Dance

Mrs M. Blakemore welcomed dancers to Shirebrook Miners Welfare Social Centre yesterday week. Mrs M. Goodall organised and led the dancing. Mr P. Goodall provided the music.

Keep Fit

Mrs K. Lindsay welcomed members to Shirebrook Village Hall yesterday week for line dancing and gentle exercise to music.
