The ARTiculation Prize 2014 is an annual event designed to promote the appreciation and discussion of art. The competition seeks to engage students, regardless of background or experience with art and to develop the confidence and ability to express opinions, thoughts and conclusions. Competing students delivered a ten minute presentation to an audience about a work of art, artefact or architecture of their choice. The final of this year’s ARTiculation Prize took place at Clare College, University of Cambridge earlier this month. Several Shirebrook Academy students attended two ARTiculation Discovery Days, at Chatsworth House last year where they researched artifacts from the Duke of Devonshire’s estate and along with students from six other schools, presented their findings to the Duke, a group of art historians and university lecturers from around the country. Lucy Salisbury, Head of Outreach for the Roche Court Educational Trust, who attended the Discovering ARTiculation Day at Chatsworth, later sent invitations for Shirebrook Academy students to attend the regional heat of The ARTiculation Prize at the Hepworth Gallery, Yorkshire. Students then prepared speeches and delivered them to groups within the Academy. Six students, George McDonnell (Y9), Abigail Shevlin, Adrianne Nussey, and Courtney Parsons (Y10), Katie Salmon and Georgina Mae Hall delivered their power point presentations and speeches to a Year 7 class, plus three visiting African teachers, Mr Marshall, Miss Miller and Mr Croft who adjudicated their performances. Katie Salmon was awarded first prize and later delivered her speech about the American photographer, Eve Arnold before television cameras at the Hepworth Gallery. All students received certificates and prizes. Adjudicator was Dr Abigail Harrison - Moore, Programme Director for the MA in Art Gallery and Museum Studies, University of Leeds. A group of Year 8 students recently visited Drax Power Station, North Yorkshire. The Stardome has also been available in school. A group of students recently visited a GCSE Science Live event ahead of the Academies Science and Engineering week which began on Monday. A Key Stage 3 Science Club has been established to accommodate all the budding science enthusiasts.

Willow Tree Farm

Work has started on a new garden project. Volunteers are being sought to help turn the area into a sensory garden and a small butterfly house. Staff and volunteers have already transformed an old garden area into a new duck house and pond. A group of adults from Portland College recently visited the farm to help with farming activities. Three new baby goats are now roaming around the stable yard. A celebratory gathering was held for Ann-Marie Fletcher who is leaving the staff at the farm to pursue her career elsewhere. New employees Tina Lees and Michael Scudder have been welcomed to the management team. Holy Trinity

The Rev June Palmer was the celebrant at a Holy Communion service on Sunday week when the theme for her sermon was, ‘Temptation’. Bible readings were by Mr D. Maynard and Mr I. P. Hill. Rev Palmer read the Gospel. The bread and wine were taken to the altar by Mrs Helen Hornsby and Mr James Taylor. Mr A. Tracy took the collection. Mrs K. Lindsay was the welcome steward. Shirebrook Church hosted the first of five Lent services for the Bolsover and Staveley Deanery. The Rt Rev Humphrey Southern, Bishop of Repton, began a series of sermons on a Lent journey with Jesus, this first being based on, ‘I am the Light of the World’. Rev John Draycott led the service. Rev Palmer led prayers. Cantor was the Rev S. Short, Vicar of Barlborough. Readings were by Mrs Noreen Maynard and Mr I. P. Hill. Organist was Mr John Whybrow. The collection was taken by Miss W. Palmer and Mrs M. Launders. The Bishop was escorted by church wardens, Mr and Mrs D Maynard.

Chit Chat Club

Mrs D. Gough welcomed members to Shirebrook Village Hall yesterday week where she also collected subscriptions. Members played bingo with caller Maureen Gough and held a raffle won by Sheila Worthington. A birthday card and a glass bonbon dish were presented to Mary Mitchell. Members provided get well cards and a gift of a dressing gown which were delivered to Edna Rowlin by Maureen Gough. Refreshments were served by Annette Toon, Audrey Draycott, Sylvia Garton and Maureen Gough.

Salvation Army

Home League Secretary, Mrs Eunice Smith led the recent members meeting. On Shrove Tuesday a short meditation was followed by a pancake party. Buddies playgroup on Thursday week was led by Maj Ina Neill, Marian Hicks and Diane Cooper. Jean Leadbeater led the Friday week Sunshine Club members meeting where she played music and read poems by Pam Ayres. A two course dinner was served on Saturday week at the Home League annual dinner. A short sketch was performed by Home League members. Monies raised will be used to aid the Salvation Army’s anti-trafficking work. Maj Neill and Miss Leadbeater organised the Sunday week JAM Club meeting where children listened to the story of, ‘The Ten Commandments’. Maj Neill led the service on Commitment Sunday.

Self Help Group

Mrs G. Mee welcomed members to Shirebrook Village Hall on Wednesday week where she also collected subscriptions and called the bingo. The room was prepared ahead of the meeting by Iris Cooke, Eva Hayes, Diane Graves and Sylvia Garton. Nora Simons supplied a chocolate birthday cake for members to share and provided the raffle prizes. Mrs Simons was presented with a birthday card and chocolate. Members played a game of Sticky 13, bingo, held a raffle won by Marian Robinson and took part in a general knowledge quiz. Jean Banks was welcomed as a new member.

Bolsover Wellness

Julie Bonsall, Lina Harris and Gavin Jackson welcomed members on a daily basis to Shirebrook Leisure Centre Monday week to Thursday week inclusive. Members took part in chair based exercises as part of the ‘Wellness Programme.’ Details of how to access the programme are available from Julie Bonsall on Mansfield 748313.

Early Birds Day N’sery

Babies recently played with toy animals in sand and dolls and sponges in water. Cars were used to make tracks in flour in tactile play. Imaginative role play was with a family of puppets. Toddlers played with number elephants in water and used magazines and scissors in creative play. Children traced their own name in mark making. Compare bears were used to improve fine motor skills. Pre-school children created a message in a bottle and used Knupferli for construction. Occupations cards and puppets were used to improve language skills with mini motors being used for mathematics. Outdoors play was on an obstacle course. Becky Fletcher organised a biscuit decorating activity at the After School Club where children also played on a Playstation.

Staff and Social Club

Mr M. Fletcher hosted a games night on Monday week evening. The pool match winner was Malcolm Fletcher with Dickie Dillon winning the dominoes match and Gary Lamb the darts match.

Happy Chat Coffee

Julie Bonsall welcomed members to Shirebrook Leisure Centre on Wednesday week where she also collected subscriptions, organised table games alongside Dot Hindley and served refreshments with Ross Thorndyke. A birthday cake and cards were presented to Marjorie Wardle. Raffle winners were Elaine Brown, David Butler, Jo Sutherland, Anne Locke, Phyllis Guy, Iris Owens, Alan Tudor and Audrey Doyle.

Leisure Centre

Pilates, Total Body Workout with Fitball and Gentle workout sessions were led by Lina Harris. Danny Butler organised and led Boxing Circuits and Abs Blast sessions. Gymnastics was led by Leah Herbert. For etails of sessions and times contact Mansfield 748313.

Grange Care Home

Residents in the nursing lounge have recently completed word search puzzles, attended a hands and nails pamper session and played dominoes. Hamilton Suite residents completed one to one activities, held a sing along to music form the 1950s/1960s and attended a card making session. In the residential dining room, residents played bingo and held a reminiscence session. Pancakes were served at teatime on Shrove Tuesday. The Forest Singers Choir provided entertainment for everyone on Thursday week afternoon in the nursing lounge. Activities were led by Mandy Lindley and Natasha Westwood.

Sports Club

Coach, Ross Thorndyke led activities on Thursday week at Shirebrook Leisure Centre for 14 members that included one on one football, gym work, basketball and a seven a side football match. With effect from the end of March the club will be organised and led by Shirebrook Leisure Centre staff with the two hour room hire fee being paid by the club. Richmond Care Home

Residents Graham Wilcock, Agnes Southwell and Marjorie Wilde recently celebrated their birthdays with a tea party. Guests took part in a chair based pass the parcel game where everyone won a small treat. Residents played dominoes and skittles and are painting pictures of flowers to create a display for Mother’s Day.

Methodist Church

Sunday week’s evening worship was led by Rev Bob Jones who spoke about the temptations of Jesus in the wilderness and that we should be prepared to be tempted when things are going well. Readers were Lindsey Ferreday, Sue Hall, Robert and Hazel Fennell. Refreshments were served after the service.

Keep Fit

Mrs K. Lindsay welcomed Mesdames D. Stevenson, S. Creswell, G. Mee, J. Charlesworth and M. Mitchell to Shirebrook Village Hall yesterday week for line dancing and gentle exercise to music.
