THE CHAIRMAN of Notts County Council is pledging to lose pounds on a diet to earn pounds for the Royal British Legion (RBL), which has branches in Hucknall and Bulwell.

Coun Keith Walker (Con) is turning away from cream cakes and bidding to lose two stone by the end of his term of office in May.

In turn he wants locals to sponsor him for every half a stone he sheds.

He has embarked on a healthy-eating plan, is exercising on a cross-trainer at home and has pledged to walk more. His current weight is 15 stone.

Money raised will go to his chosen charity, the RBL, which supports ex and current servicemen and women and their families.

Coun Walker said: “I went to my doctor’s surgery before Christmas and was told that my ideal weight should be 11-and-a-half stone.

“I knew I was a bit overweight but it was very sobering to be told that my current weight makes me more at risk of heart disease and diabetes.”

He admits it will be tough but is determined to succeed in aid of the RBL
