Council pledges to find safe homes for domestic-violence victims

The move comes as the council reiterates how seriously it takes a problem that, nationally, affects one in four women and one in six men at some point in their lives.

A report updating its progress, to be presented next week, reveals that the council has achieved White Ribbon accreditation for the first time. White Ribbon is a global campaign promoting healthy relationships to reduce violence in the home.

Coun Nicolle Ndiweni (Lab), who is Ashfield’s new portfolio holder for community engagement, said this “demonstrated a genuine commitment to tackling domestic violence”. “But as part of our determination to turn this commitment into action, we will be providing safe refuge accommodation within Ashfield,” she added.

“This means those fleeing abusive relationships will be able to re-locate more easily and obtain direct support from the Women’s Aid organisation. We look forward to building the confidence of those in our community affected by domestic violence, offering them hope, safety and a chance to rebuild their lives.”

It is estimated the police receive a call about domestic violence every single minute.
