Nottinghamshire County Council currently spends around £50,000 a year on the service, which can include paying for a person’s pets to stay in a kennel or cattery for up to six weeks with a further free extension if required.

The new policy includes reducing the free offer to 14 days with one extension of a further seven days, which would save the council £27,000 a year.

The consultation on the plans is open until 31st August and people can leave feedback by visiting www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/the council/democracy/have-your-say/consultations
