Pawel Robert Jablonski, 29, of Church Drive, Shirebrook, admitted driving with excess alcohol at 6.30am on April 9, on Leeming Lane North.

George Speed, prosecuting, said the owner of the fence Jablonski destroyed saw him get out of the car and inspect the damage before police arrived.

“He candidly told the police that he was so drunk when arrested he couldn’t remember crashing the vehicle or driving,” Mr Speed said.

He was found to be nearly three times over the legal limit, with 101 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, when the legal limit is 35 microgrammes.

Cheryl Nisbet, of the probation service, said Jablonski had been to a party the night before.

“He didn’t intend driving home afterwards,” she said, “but couldn’t really give an explanation as to why he did.”

The court heard he had no previous convictions in the UK, but had received a suspended sentence in Poland, ten years earlier, for a fight.

Since the crash Jablonski lost his job as a lorry driver, which he had held for 18 months.

Via an interpreter, Jablonski apologised to the court and said he had stopped drinking alcohol.

Magistrates banned him from driving for two years and imposed a 12 month community order with 120 hours of unpaid work. He must also pay £500 compensation and £85 court costs.
