Crews tackle blazing lorries on M1

Two lorries which were involved in a collision on the M1 motorway near Chesterfield have caused big delays for motorists.

The collision happened on the southbound carriageway between junctions 29a and 29 at about 2.10am, today, Saturday, May 23.

A Derbyshire fire service spokesman said: “The two lorries were well alight on the M1 and firefighters used three hose reel jets to extinguish the fire.”

The area was made safe by about 4.40am but the incident has created big delays along the motorway.

Both southbound and northbound carriageways had to be closed initially however the northbound carriageway was reopened about 6.50am.

But the southbound carriageway is expected to remain closed throughout Saturday, according to the emergency services.

A diversion has been put in place for affected motorists.
