Jonathan Mills' VW Golf was stopped by police on Jennison Street, Bulwell, at 7.30pm, on October 21, last year, said prosecutor Robert Carr.

Officers pulled him over because he had been speeding on Main Street and when they approached him noticed the smell of cannabis on his breath and saw that his eyes were bloodshot.

A test revealed he had 11 mcgs of the drug in one litre of blood when the specified limit is 2 mcgs.

Ian Boddy, mitigating, said the full-time baker, who was of previous good character, had been working 12 hour shifts.

He said that Mills began using cannabis occasionally to deal with a "torrid time" in his personal life last year.

He was driving home with a colleague who lit up a joint and Mills took a couple of drags, said Mr Boddy.

He said the inevitable ban would make it difficult for him to get to and from work, and to visit his two children.

"He seems quite a switched-on person who made a mistake while he was going through a horrific time," Mr Boddy told magistrates.

Mills, 29, of Valley Road, Kimberley, pleaded guilty to the motoring offence at Nottingham Magistrates Court, on Wednesday, March 10.

He was fined £232 and he was ordered to pay £85 costs and a victim surcharge of £34.

He was banned from driving for 12 months.
