Man sentenced after attacking stranger with an axe in Nottinghamshire park

Graham Timlick, 67, of Cairngorm Drive in Bestwood, was sentenced at Nottingham Crown Court after pleading guilty to affray, inflicting grievous bodily harm, and two counts of possessing an offensive weapon at an earlier hearing.

Officers from Nottinghamshire Police were called just after 8.30pm on Friday, May 29, to a report that a man had been attacked with an axe.

The victim had been driving an off-road bike through Bestwood Country Park in Bestwood, and had stopped when Timlick ran up behind him and hit him on the head with an axe.

The man was knocked off his bike and struck to the head again before Timlick ran away.

When interviewed by officers, Timlick claimed he had ongoing issues with motorbikes riding past his garden and he took the axe to smash up the bike.

Timlick was also found to be responsible for an incident in October 2019, when he chased after a group of teenagers holding a knife in the air.

Timlick was sentenced to 20 months suspended for two years.

Detective Constable Olivia West, who investigated the incident, said: “It’s never okay to take the law into your own hands and this case is a perfect example of that.

"Because of the vigilante-style actions of Timlick, a man was injured in what must have been a terrifying attack.

“Nottinghamshire Police does a range of work to tackle the antisocial behaviour caused by off-road bikes – in fact an operation was carried out in this area just last weekend.

“Lots of this work goes on behind the scenes and may not always be obvious to residents, but I can assure you that we take all reports made to us seriously.

“There is never an excuse for violence and I’m glad we were able to put Timlick before the courts for this shocking behaviour.”
