Dave takes on LeJog rally

Bilshthorpe man and Ex-firefighter Dave Bryan is rallying from Land’s End to John O’ Groats raising money for charity Breast Cancer Care in memory of his wife.

The 1,500-mile endurance rally in a 44-year-old Ford Escort MK 1 is known as one of the most demanding and challenging events in Europe.

LeJog British classic rally driving experience runs between 7th-10th December, takes in no motorways and is only open to cars built before 1984.

Said Dave: “Two-and-a-half years ago my wife was diagnosed with terminal breast cancer. She sadly passed away in March.

“As part of her legacy we bought this car and started preparing for the rally.

“Since her passing we have collected quite a bit of money for breast cancer charities.

“We are delighted that we can do this in memory of Linda.”

This will be a huge challenge for Dave and his friend and co-driver Ian Humpherson as it will be the first time they have crewed together and Dave’s first time in the hot seat for 35 years.

“I am looking forward to it,” said Dave (56). “But the car is quite a handful and as you get older you tend to drive a bit slower and more carefully.

“We are not looking at where we are going to finish. You are not racing the other competitors but against the clock - but you are on main roads a lot of the time so have to stick to the speed limits.”

“Also, you have to realise that the technology on a 44-year-old car is quite different.

“You can repair them at the side of the road, which is an advantage, but you have to take all your spares on-board, which does not leave much room for luggage.”

Throughout the event there are rally challenges such as speed test around bollards plus navigation.

Crews compete for Gold, Silver & Bronze medals plus a variety of special awards, including the much sought after Marque Team Trophy.

Said Dave: “It is a terrific atmosphere at this event and you get people coming from all over, including Switzerland, Holland and even America.
