A whole community was shocked to learn Ray Froggatt who has busked in the town centre for 30 years has just months to live.

Friends and musicians form the town have rallied round to organise a fundraising music day at the Star Mansfield Woodhouse on September 6.

More than a dozen top local bands are taking part in the event, which starts at 1pm and hundreds of people are expected on the day to show their support.

His friend Alan Walker who is helping to organise the event, said: “Ray has busked in Mansfield for 30 years and has lived off what he earned and never claimed benefits. Hats off to him.

“I found out after I hadn’t seen him for two weeks in the town.

“He plays summer and winter in all weathers.

“He is one of the town’s characters and I bet 90 per cent of people in Mansfield know him personally.

“The town will be losing one of its characters and anything we can do for him he deserves.”

Ray was diagnosed with lung cancer which spread to his lymphatic system and his brain.

He said: “ When I found out I was quite amazed they have organised this for me.

“Everything has happened so quickly.

“I’m 56 and I’ve lived half my life and enjoyed playing music. I feel more sorry for younger people who are in my condition.”

Ray found out he had cancer after he was no longer able to press down the strings properly on his guitar.

He is now unable to play as his condition progresses.

Ray, 56 was born in Winnipeg Canada and came to the UK with his family in 1969.

He first started playing guitar when he was seven and attended Sherwood Hall School.
