Deal for shopping centre is ‘close’

The town’s main retail outlet was put up for sale earlier this year by Premier Property group, who are owned by former Rangers FC chairman Sir David Murray.

The identity of the potential new owners and the figures behind an expected agreement are being closely guarded while the final contracts are being finalised.

But it is hoped the deal will pave the way for fresh investment into the centre, both from the purchasers and from retailers.

“It’s very close to happening and will go through very soon all being well,” said Egginton. “Once it does, it gives us the opportunity to put some fresh impetus into redeveloping shopping in the town centre.

“I will be looking to arrange a meeting with the new owners very quickly and I think it’s crucial that we do.

“One of the most important areas to look at is to expand the Four Seasons onto the old bus station site because that is where there is the space and potential to attract the bigger retailers.”

The centre has been marketed by commercial property experts CBRE and subject to a tendering process that was completed around three weeks ago.

Shoppers are assured that the centre’s sale will have no effect on the venue in the short-term and will remain open throughout the festive season.
