Death on tramline inquiry

THE DEATH of a man who collided with a tram caused major upheaval for services in and out of Bulwell last weekend.

The victim, who has not been named by police, died close to the Wilkinson Street tram depot in New Basford at 4.30 pm last Friday.

As an investigation was launched, a section of the Nottingham-to-Hucknall Nottingham Express Transit (NET) line had to be shut down.

Trams from Hucknall could travel only as far as Bulwell. There was no direct route into the city.

A replacement bus-service had to be laid on to take passengers from Wilkinson Street to Bulwell and Phoenix Park.

Services returned to normal last Saturday morning.

Detectives say they are not treating the death as suspicious.

But anyone with information or who witnessed the collision is asked to ring officers on the force’s new non-emergency number of 101.

An inquest into the man’s death will be launched by the Nottingham Coroner.

The last death on the tram lines was on October 6 2007 when well-known Hucknall cricketer Matthew Dear stepped into the path of a slow-moving tram on Fletcher Gate in the Lace Market area of Nottingham city centre.
