A devoted Hucknall couple, who have been leading lights in local amateur dramatics, took centre-stage at celebrations for their diamond wedding anniversary.
Alan and Vera Bell (nee Gray) marked the milestone event with a party at the Royal British Legion in the town.
The couple, originally from Newark, first met in a swimming pool as teenagers and had their first date at the cinema.
The pair tied the knot at Newark Parish Church in 1955, and they have lived in Walkmill Drive, Hucknall for 53-years. Alan (80), spent 30 years as a production engineer at Rolls Royce, while Vera, also aged 80, was a civil servant.
For more than 50 years the couple have been heavily involved with the Rolls Royce Musical Theatre Company and led in the group’s charity fundraising initiatives.
Alan and Vera have two daughters and four grandchildren. Vera said: “Our lives have been enriched by a wonderful family and many special friends. The years have rolled by and ours has been a marvellous marriage. We have been blessed and to be able to celebrate our diamond wedding anniversary in the company of family and friends is very special to us.”
A card of congratulations from her Majesty the Queen was the icing on the cake for Alan and Vera who are regarded as one of Hucknall’s ‘nicest couples’.
Neighbours who attended the celebration said: “They are kind, caring and thoughtful and would do anything to help others.”
