Dirty urine soaked bus shelter in Rainworth which has become a magnet for anti social behaviour and arson is set to be replaced after a campaign by residents

Campaigners presented a 100 name petition to Nottinghamshire County Council asking for the only brick built shelter left in the town on Warsop Lane to be replaced with a modern perspex one.

Campaigner Amanda Rayment said ‘‘My garden backs on to this bus stop and it really does affect our lives.

“We can’t sit out in our garden because the smell of urine is so strong.

“The bus stop is constantly full of litter, and we can always hear people shouting, swearing, fighting or occasionally having sex in it.

“I’m down here every week with my marigolds on cleaning and mopping it to try and get rid of the smell and I shouldn’t have to do it”

Sherwood MP Mark Spencer who has written in support of the residents, said: “It’s the low level crime that affects your quality of life and makes you feel like your area isn’t a nice place, and it brings people down.

“This is a prime example and there is a very simple and relatively cheap solution.”

Councillor Kevin Greaves, Committee Chairman for the Transport and Highways Committee at Nottinghamshire County Council, said: “We are always committed to listening to local communities and supporting public transport. In response to the community concerns we have been able to find funding to replace the brick NS0307 Thoresby Road bus shelter sited on Warsop Lane, Rainworth, with a polycarbonate bus shelter, and the work will be carried out by the end of March next year. “Between now and when the new shelter is installed, we will arrange for the existing bus shelter to be cleaned out on a monthly basis and we have also arranged for Newark and Sherwood District Council to install a bin close by to the bus stop.

“We also encourage people to continue to report any antisocial behaviour to the police or district council if it continues.”
