Driving advice in wet conditions

Motorists have been warned to drive carefully on wet roads, as more heavy rain is forecast for Nottinghamshire in the coming days.

Nottinghamshire County Council has issued advice that motorists are being urged to follow in order to avoid accidents or incidents on the road.

This includes taking it easy when driving through standing water to avoid the risk of aquaplaning and only driving through water if you know that it’s not too deep.

If driving through deep water, take it slowly but steadily, using a low gear, to avoid creating waves or causing your car engine to take in water and people should test their brakes as soon as possible after leaving the water.

Headlights should be used when visibility is seriously reduced and it is getting dark due to black clouds and motorists should double the distance between your car and the car in front of you, as stopping distances are increased by wet roads.
