Drunk man hit police officer by mistake

A drunken Mansfield man has been put on an alcohol programme after accidentally striking a police officer while being escorted home.

John Ross Draycott (25), of Sandy Lane, was found acting in a drunk and abusive manner in the town centre on 23rd January, Mansfield Magistrates’ Court was told on Wednesday.

He was first driven away from the town centre by police but refused to leave, so was taken home by officers. But as an officer climbed from the rear of the vehicle, he felt a blow to the back of his head.

Defence lawyers said the strike had been accidental and Draycott was given a six-month community order with six alcohol awareness sessions after admitting assaulting a police officer and being drunk and disorderly.
