Ex Bulwell boxer in attack charge

A former British boxing champion from Bulwell has appeared in court accused of an attack on the street.

Delroy Bryan (46) won six national welterweight title fights in an illustrious professional boxing career between 1986 and 1998.

But he appeared in the dock at Nottingham Crown Court on a charge of unlawfully and malicious wounding Glen Bowler at Parliament Street, Nottingham, on Saturday 24th August last year.

No details of the alleged offence were given, but Robert Egbuna (defending) indicated that Mr Bryan, of Willow Hill Close, Bulwell, will be pleading not guilty.

The case was adjourned until Friday 16th May after the court heard it might have to be transferred to the courts at Leicester, Derby or Lincoln -- in the interests of fair justice.

This was because Mr Bryan used to work at the Nottingham Crown Court building and was well known to judges, barristers, clerks and ushers there.

“Urgent consideration should be given to the venue for this trial,” said Recorder Timothy Spencer.

“Very few people in this building would not have had dealings with Mr Bryan. There is a slight sense of uncomfortableness.”

A highly respected boxer, Bryan won 32, lost 19 and drew one of his 52 professional bouts.

He first landed the British welterweight title in 1991 when defeating Kirkland Laing at the Royal Albert Hall in London.

He successfully defended it later that year and although he briefly lost the belt the following year to Gary Jacob in Glasgow, he regained it in 1993.

Bryan won three more title fights before surrendering his British crown to Yorkshireman Chris Saunders at Mansfield in 1995.

In 1994, he also fought for the European welterweight title, losing on a technical knockout to Jose Luis Navarro in Spain.
