Ex-drug addict gets second chance

Mansfield magistrates were told how Tom Fisher (37), of Millside, had been injecting and orally ingesting the drug before his home was searched by police.

Neil Hollett, prosecuting, said Fisher told police during an interview the drug was for his own personal use.

Yvonne Wrajj, defending, told the court how Fisher had admitted the offence while already serving drug rehabilitation requirements under a suspended jail sentence.

“This has been the only offence he has committed,” said Ms Wrajj.

“We are not talking about dealing - this is straight, personal use of a small amount of amphetamine.

“Since then he has complied with his order and has been taking a lot of help from the drug rehabilitation order.”

Ms Wrajj said since regularly testing negative for illegal drugs Fisher had improved his estranged relationship with his father - a retired policeman of 30 years.

The family were now in counselling at Hetty’s - a support service for drug users and their relatives.

Said Ms Wrajj; “If he goes to prison now everything will just fall away.”

She said health concerns, including ulcers from drug use and mental health were also improving since the Mansfield man’s curbed drug use.

A magistrate said the bench was impressed with the progress Fisher had made and gave him an electronically-monitored curfew between 7pm-7am.

He was also given a three-month drug rehabilitation requirement and ordered to pay a £60 victim surcharge.
