This year’s event is set to be another festive extravaganza with lots of free entertainment for all the family throughout the day in the town centre.

It will be followed by a spectacular stage show in the market place.

There will be guest appearances at intervals from children’s television favourite Mike the Knight - so don’t forget to bring your camera.

Executive Mayor Tony Egginton said: “Do not miss the opportunity to see Santa and join in the countdown to the launch of this year’s Christmas lights display.

“It is guaranteed to get you and the family into the seasonal spirit.”

This traditional event marks the start of late night shopping in Mansfield town centre which begins on 20th November.

The Christmas lights switch on has always been major event in the town in years gone by.

It was thought that up to 8,000 people crammed into the Market Square for last year’s Christmas lights switch on as the countdown to the festive period got underway.

The mainstage in front of the town hall was graced by Cantamus Girls Choir, The Ghost Academy’s performing arts band and dancers, as well as guest appearances from Palace Theatre pantomime stars Ruth Madoc and Dave Benson Phillips, Postman Pat and of course, Father Christmas.

Previous years saw performances from 80s heart-throb Chesney Hawkes, Fame Academy contestant Lemar and X-Factor star Chico.
