EXCLUSIVE: Thoresby Colliery will close by the end of 2015

Thoresby Colliery is set to close by the end of next year, the Chad can exclusively reveal.

The general secretary of the Union of Democratic Mineworkers (UDM), Mick Stevens, spoke to Chad this afternoon to clarify that more than 200 jobs are set to go with immediate effect, and the remaining 400 will go by the Autumn of 2015.

It comes after owners UK Coal, who own a string of mines across the country, revealed this week that they needed ‘at least’ £10 million to keep them open.

Mr Stevens said the union would continue to fight for the workers.

MP Mark Spencer has said that money provided by the Government will help to keep the pit open until next year, and hoped an investor could step in to save it in the mean time.
