Father and son raise cash for Headway charity with sponsored swim

Richard Playfair, aged 67 and from Hempshill Vale in Bulwell, and his son Nick, 31, will compete for most lengths completed at Ken Martin’s Leisure Centre, on Hucknall Lane, on Saturday April 9 to raise vital funds for Headway – the brain injury association.

The pair first decided to host the event for Headway UK, which supports people affected by brain injury and their families, after Richard began volunteering at the charity’s Bulwell shop and saw first-hand the importance of brain injury support services in the region.

Staff at Ken Martin’s Leisure Centre have promised to cordon off the fastest lanes in the pool between 2.30pm and 3.45pm for the swimming challenge.

“We have an incredibly dedicated team at the Headway UK shop where everyone happily pulls their weight for the cause,” said Richard, who volunteers at the store every weekend.

“Nick and I decided to show our support by teaming up and seeing how many lengths we can tackle in the allocated time. ”

Headway shop manager Sue Breward said this week: “The complex and often devastating effects of brain injury could affect anyone at anytime, and knowing where to turn for support may make the world of difference when they do.

“Richard is a new and valued addition to the Headway team who has wasted no time in showing incredible community spirit by getting his family and supporters involved with fundraising to help more people living with the effects of brain injury.”
