David Neil Bacon, aged 58, was returning home after a day at a Chesterfield bike show when tragedy struck.

The married father of two was just over a mile from home when he was involved in a collision with a car on the A611 between Annesley and Hucknall.

“The whole family are in shock and he will be sorely missed,” said his wife of 27 years Kate. “I was at a gymkhana event at Warren Riding Club at Annesley Woods near where it happened.

“We saw the ambulances but I never thought for one minute it would be David involved.”

David died at the scene when his blue Yamaha motorbike was in collision with a silver Kia Venga car.

The crash happened at around 2.50pm near the exit for Newstead.

A female passenger in the Kia was taken to Nottingham’s Queen’s Medical Centre with minor injuries. No one else was injured.

“Bikes were part of our family. It was something we all enjoyed together,” added Kate who ran a coffee supply business with her husband for the past 12 years. “We took over the business from a friend as David, who was a skilled toolmaker by trade, thought it would give him the chance to have more free time and enjoy life.

“His moral was work to live not live to work as he enjoyed his hobbies.”

As well as biking in his spare time , David was a member of the Goosedale Model Flying Club.

“He had even owned a microlight in the past and loved to fly but gave it up and then joined the model club.”

David was into heavy rock music and the couple enjoyed going to local gigs and meeting up with other bikers at Shipley’s MFN Club.

“He also loved to tinker and could make anything from metal, even if it did take him a while to finish it,” remembers Kate fondly.

The funeral date has not yet been set but the family hope to have a motorcycle hearse as Kate says: “David joked years ago that he would never go that slow -even at his own funeral.”

Donations are requested in lieu of flowers to the Lincs and Notts Air Ambulance.
